My Stepdad’s Quiet House
The house was always quiet after dinner. Mom had gone back to her evening shift at the hospital, leaving the two of them alone in the low light of the living room. Rain ticked against the windows. The old floorboards creaked when someone shifted weight. Marisol sat on the couch with her legs tucked under her, scrolling through nothing on her phone, while her stepdad, Mark, read in the armchair across from her. He was in his late forties, solid through the shoulders, salt starting at his temples. He wore a plain gray T-shirt and soft flannel pants. The only sound between them was the occasional turn of a page and the rain.
Marisol was twenty-three. She had moved back for a few weeks while she sorted out a new apartment in the city. Mark had never pushed. He just made space, left the light on in the hallway, and kept the coffee pot warm in the mornings. Tonight the quiet felt different. Heavier. She caught him glancing at her bare feet, then away again.
“You cold?” he asked, voice low.
“A little.” She wasn’t really. The house was warm. She just wanted the blanket that was folded on the arm of his chair. He stood, shook it out, and crossed the short distance. When he draped it over her knees, his hand stayed a moment longer than it needed to on her shin. Warm palm, light pressure. She didn’t move away. Instead she let her calf rest against his fingers.
“Thanks.” Her voice came out softer than she expected.
He didn’t go back to the chair. He sat on the edge of the coffee table, close enough that she could smell the clean soap on his skin and the faint trace of the cedar from the bookshelves. Outside, the rain thickened. Inside, neither of them reached for the remote.
“You’ve been quiet all evening,” he said.
“So have you.”
A small smile touched the corner of his mouth. “Thinking.”
“About what?”
He studied her face for a long second. “About how you’re not a kid anymore. Haven’t been for a while. And how this house feels different when it’s just the two of us.”
Her stomach did a slow flip. She set the phone down. “Different how?”
“Like I have to be careful where I look.” His hand was still on her shin under the blanket. His thumb moved once, a careful stroke. “Tell me if you want me to stop.”
She didn’t. She shifted so her leg pressed more firmly into his palm. “I don’t.”
That was enough. He leaned in. The first kiss was slow, testing. His mouth was warm, a little dry from the book. She opened to him immediately, tongue sliding against his, and the low sound he made went straight between her legs. When he pulled back, his eyes were dark.
“Still okay?”
“Yes.” She reached for the hem of his shirt and tugged. “Come here.”
He moved to the couch, settled beside her, and kissed her again, deeper this time. One hand cupped the side of her neck, thumb stroking the soft skin under her jaw. The other slipped under the blanket and found the bare skin above her knee. She was in an old pair of cotton shorts. His fingers traced the edge of them, not pushing, just learning the shape of her thigh. She spread her legs a little wider in answer.
Clothes came off without hurry. He pulled her shirt over her head and dropped it on the floor. She wasn’t wearing a bra. His gaze moved over her breasts, then back to her face. “Beautiful.” He said it like a fact. When he lowered his mouth to her nipple, she arched into him, fingers sliding into his hair. He licked slowly, then sucked, gentle pressure that made her breath catch. His free hand stroked her ribs, her waist, the soft curve of her stomach. Every touch asked a question. Every time she pressed closer or made a quiet sound, he took it as yes.
She worked his shirt off. His chest was broad, lightly haired, warm under her palms. She kissed the hollow of his throat, felt his pulse against her lips. He exhaled hard when she scraped her teeth there, light. His hands slid down her back, under the waistband of her shorts, and cupped her ass. He squeezed once, then pulled her fully into his lap. She straddled him, the blanket falling away. The hard length of him pressed up through the thin fabric of his pants. She rocked once, testing. He groaned into her mouth.
“Bedroom,” he said against her lips. “If you want.”
She nodded. He stood with her still wrapped around him, carried her the short distance down the hall. The bed was made. He set her on the edge and knelt between her knees. His hands slid up her thighs and hooked into her shorts. He looked up.
“These come off?”
“Please.”
He peeled them down, taking her underwear with them. Cool air touched her. She was already wet. He could see it. His thumbs stroked the soft skin of her inner thighs, spreading her open with care. Then he leaned in and kissed her there, mouth open, tongue broad and slow. She fell back on her elbows, one hand finding his hair again. He licked her the way he had kissed her—unhurried, thorough, learning what made her hips lift. When he closed his lips around her clit and sucked gently, her thighs trembled. She told him with her body: harder there, softer here, stay. He listened. Two fingers eased inside her, curling, and the stretch was perfect. She came with a soft cry, thighs tightening around his head, the rain loud against the windows.
He stayed with her through it, kissing her thigh when the shudders eased. Then he stood, pushed his pants and boxers down, and stepped out of them. He was thick, flushed, already leaking at the tip. She reached for him, wrapped her hand around the base, and stroked once. He watched her face.
“I want you inside me,” she said.
He climbed onto the bed, guided her back against the pillows, and settled between her legs. The head of him nudged her entrance. He paused, eyes on hers.
“Like this?”
“Yes. Slow.”
He pushed in, inch by careful inch. She was slick and open from his mouth. Still, he waited for her body to take him, for the small hitch in her breath to smooth out. When he was fully seated, he stayed still, forehead resting against hers. She could feel him throb. She rolled her hips once, encouraging, and he began to move—long, deep strokes that dragged against every sensitive place inside her. The bed creaked. Outside, the rain kept its steady rhythm.
He braced on one forearm, the other hand sliding under her knee to open her wider. Each thrust was measured. He watched her face, adjusting when her breath caught, when her nails dug lightly into his shoulders. She met him, lifting to take him deeper, the wet sound of their bodies filling the quiet room. Pleasure built again, slower this time, spreading from where they were joined outward. She told him with her heels against his lower back, with the way she kissed his jaw, open-mouthed and wanting.
“Right there,” she whispered when he angled his hips. “Don’t stop.”
He didn’t. He kept the same steady pace, the same depth, until she came again, tighter around him, a low broken sound against his throat. Only then did he let his own control slip. His thrusts grew shorter, deeper. She held him through it, hands stroking his back, murmuring soft encouragement. He came with a rough exhale, buried deep, the heat of it spilling inside her. For a long moment neither of them moved.
After, he eased out carefully and pulled the sheet over them both. She stayed curled against his chest, one leg draped over his. His hand rested on her hip, thumb moving in slow circles. The house was quiet again. The rain had softened to a mist.
“You okay?” he asked, voice low against her hair.
She pressed a kiss to his collarbone. “More than okay.”
He exhaled, the last of the tension leaving his shoulders. Outside, a car passed on the wet street, headlights sliding across the ceiling and gone. Inside, they stayed like that, skin to skin, the old house settling around them. Mom wouldn’t be home for hours. For now, the quiet belonged to them.
