My mother seemed a little annoyed. She said, “Slow down, will you? Are you crazy? You’ve smeared your saliva all over my face!”

Gupta Uncle replied, “Shut up, bitch! You were just begging for it.”

My mother quickly pulled her blouse together and adjusted her saree. Gupta Uncle started buttoning his pants and looked around for his slippers. I sat there frozen, unable to move. Finally, I crept down the stairs.

As soon as I entered the house, my father asked, “What happened, beta? Did you not find your mother?” She left her mobile phone here and will be back soon,” he said.

I looked at my father for a moment before going to the bathroom and turning on the tap. I let the water run over my face as tears streamed down my cheeks. How could my mother be so shameless?

Suddenly, I realized why she had been so quiet. I needed to stay silent too, for my father’s sake. My mother would never admit to what I had seen.

When my mother came back from her “walk,” I couldn’t help but ask, “Where were you?”

She quickly changed the subject and said, “I was just visiting a new neighbor who moved in.” She didn’t even seem embarrassed or ashamed.
